Integrative Breathwork is a powerful self-healing technique that works on and integrates every level of our being: physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. The primary goal of a breath session is to open up the respiratory system and create an open, flowing breath. Most people have restricted breathing patterns, usually due to suppressing unwanted memories or feelings by shutting down parts of their respiratory system. As facilitators guide participants to breathe into these traditionally protected or restricted areas, they bring awareness and energy into those parts of the body and facilitate the integration of suppressed energy patterns (emotions and memories) stored there.
One of the most fascinating aspects of Integrative Breathwork is the connection between a person’s breathing pattern and what’s happening in their life at the levels of personality, behavior, the subconscious, and expression. Facilitators are trained to interpret and translate the participant’s relationship with life or life-force energy. With this specific information about individual breathing patterns, breath facilitators can offer supportive affirmations to help open the breath and reprogram limiting beliefs in the subconscious. Additionally, they can identify breathing patterns that align with dominant attitudes and behaviors, helping clients become more aware of their actions and choices. Alongside breath pattern observation, facilitators also use Body Language Translation to interpret the messages our bodies convey through the physical manifestations of issues or symptoms.
In Integrative Breathwork, we use a “hands-on” approach in various ways for different reasons. First, we apply light pressure to relax the muscles controlling respiration, and we also use acupressure to activate cellular memories that are integrated with the breath. Movement and sound are also employed to help clients move through patterns of control or resistance. The use of sound and toning is a valuable part of this process, helping to release constricted areas in the breath. By expressing sound, what has been suppressed can be freed, creating more openness in the breath and in our feelings. Most of the suppressed material accessed is integrated during the session rather than manifesting in our daily lives.
